30 new electric buses in 2020 secures The Go-Ahead Group’s position as largest operator of electric buses in the UK

LONDON – The Go-Ahead Group is delighted to announce that Brighton & Hove Bus and Go North East have been named by Transport Minister Nusrat Ghani as recipients of funding for a new wave of ultra-low emission buses.

The award is part of a £48million investment from the UK Office for Low Emission Vehicles for new green vehicles and infrastructure to drive forward government plans to clean up the air in towns and cities.

  • 30 new electric buses to be introduced in 2020
  • Total of 79 buses across all Go-Ahead bus companies, strengthening company’s position as the largest operator of electric buses in the UK
  • Award is part of a £48million investment from the UK Office for Low Emission Vehicles

This commitment will see Go-Ahead strengthen its position as the largest operator of electric buses in the UK, with a total of 79 buses across all our bus companies.

Buses Minister Nusrat Ghani said:

“Buses are far more than a way of getting from A to B. They are a crucial tool in the fight against loneliness and it is good to see the industry taking steps to tackle isolation.”

“This government is doing more than ever before to reduce emissions across all modes of transport and I’m delighted to see the bus industry putting itself at the forefront of this.”

Brighton & Hove will be adding 20 zero-emission fuel cell electric buses to their existing fleet. These single decker vehicles will be introduced on our 24-hour, high-frequency Metrobus Fastway services to and from Gatwick Airport and Manor Royal Business District in Crawley.

Go North East will introduce nine electric buses, and overnight electric charging infrastructure will be installed at Go North East's Gateshead Riverside depot, where the buses will be based.

Go-Ahead Group CEO David Brown said:

“New technologies such as electric buses are the future of the bus industry. Demonstrated by Go-Ahead’s investment in our UK first all-electric bus garage in Waterloo, we are committed to accelerating the transformational shift to ultra-low and zero emission vehicles.”

“This very welcome government funding will help strengthen Go-Ahead’s position as the largest operator of electric buses in the UK, with a total of 79 buses across all our bus companies.”

“We look forward to introducing these new vehicles as part of Go-Ahead’s concerted drive to tackle air pollution and improve air quality across England.”

The bus industry is truly leading the road transport sector in addressing climate change.”
